Creating Your Account
To sign up for Tumblr, head to tumblr.com/register in a web browser, or install the iOS or Android app and tap "Get Started." You can create your account with your email address and a password, or use your Apple ID or Google account.
On the sign up page, you'll also create the username for your primary blog. If you can't think of something, don't worry—you can change it later.
Next, enter your age and agree to our Terms of Service.
Once you've done that, you'll have the option to select some topics you're interested in seeing on your Tumblr dashboard. These topics get converted to followed tags, so you'll be able to edit them later on. You can also hit "Skip" to skip this step.
Next, you'll land in your Tumblr dashboard. On a new account, it'll be full of recommendations based on the topics you selected during sign up. Follow some blogs to see fewer recommendations. You can learn more about adjusting your dashboard preferences in this article.
Verify Your Email Address
Note: If you used a Google account or Apple ID to sign up for Tumblr, you'll skip this step.
Verifying your email helps us ensure we have the correct email address for you. We also unlock features and visibility gradually as you complete your account signup, follow other blogs, like posts, and customize your blog’s appearance—basically, the more you use Tumblr, the more of Tumblr there is to use. Verifying your email is an important step in this process.
If you haven’t received an email from us to verify, click the green banner at the top of your dashboard to send it again and check out our Help Center article on email troubleshooting.
If you’re still having trouble verifying your email address, please contact us and we’ll gladly assist you.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication
Two-factor authentication (TFA) is an added layer of security. After enabling TFA, you will need to enter a specially generated one-time code whenever you log in to your Tumblr account. This prevents someone who knows your password from accessing your account (unless they also have access to the device you use for TFA).
You can learn how to enable TFA here.
Customize Your Blog's Appearance
Consult this article to learn how to do the following:
- Upload an avatar and header image.
- Create a blog title and description.
- Change the colors used for your blog.
New Blogs & Search
If you’ve just created your blog, your posts won't appear in search results or tag pages. As we mentioned above, Tumblr gradually adds visibility to your blog as you use it. Keep following other blogs, reblogging posts, and creating your own original posts to help move the process along.
As an aside, there are a variety of factors that may impact your content’s searchability. You can read more about that here.
Finding Your Community
On a new account, you'll see a lot of recommendations in your dashboard. You can also seek out more content by using search and explore.
You can also click the search bar at the top of any dashboard page and enter a search term to find relevant posts and blogs.
Using our Android or iOS mobile apps, tap the search icon. The search bar will appear at the top, followed by the tags you follow. If you don't follow any tags, you'll see a prompt to help you follow some tags. Scroll down to see recommended blogs and posts. Further down, you'll find a list of what's trending on Tumblr.
The best way to gain followers is to be an active member of the Tumblr community; follow a lot of blogs, reblog and like their posts, and publish great content yourself.
Don't forget to tag your posts with keywords so that other users will see them when they search Tumblr.
