Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to help protect your Tumblr account.
Tumblr strongly recommends adding two-factor authentication to your account.
Setting up two-factor authentication (TFA) will require a few things:
- Your Tumblr account password
- A mobile device
- A unique, single-use code (sent via text or generated by an authenticator app)
Setting Up Two-factor Authentication
For a more secure experience, we recommend using an authenticator app for your Two-Factor Authentication codes.
On the Web
- Click "Settings" on the left. Or head directly to your account settings.
- Enable Two-factor Authentication from the Security section.
- Enter your Tumblr account password.
- Select a method for an authentication code, via an authenticator app or SMS.
- Follow the steps to receive or generate a code.
In the Apps
- Tap the account icon .
- Tap the gear icon at the top right, then tap "General settings" (iOS) or "Account settings" (Android).
- Tap Security.
- Select a method for an authentication code, via an authenticator app or SMS.
- Follow the steps to receive or generate a code.
Logging In With Two-factor Authentication
Once TFA has been enabled, you’ll use the authentication code in addition to your password to sign into your account:
- Sign into your account as normal.
- When prompted, enter the authentication code generated by your authenticator app or received via SMS.
TFA Backup Codes
We also recommend downloading a copy of your backup codes and storing them somewhere safe, just in case you need them.
If you do not have access to your phone or your phone number has changed, you can generate backup codes to get back into your Tumblr account. Backup codes can be generated on both web and mobile devices.
On the Web
- Click "Settings" on the left. Or head directly to your account settings.
- Click on the “Generate backup codes” button from the Security section.
- Enter your account password, then click Check Password.
- You’ll see ten backup codes generated. You can copy and paste them elsewhere for safe-keeping, or print them using the “Print Codes” button.
In the Apps
- Tap the account icon .
- Tap the gear icon at the top right, then tap "General settings" (iOS) or "Account settings" (Android).
- Tap Security
- Tap Generate new backup codes
- Enter your Tumblr account password
- Take a screenshot of the backup codes, or tap Copy to paste them elsewhere for safe-keeping.
Disabling TFA
We encourage using two-factor authentication to help maintain account security; your account is far less likely to get compromised with two-factor authentication enabled.. However if you need to, TFA can be disabled for your account.
On the Web
- Click "Settings" on the left. Or head directly to your account settings.
- Disable Two-factor Authentication from the Security section.
- Enter your Tumblr account password.
- Click the Disable button.
In the Apps

- Tap the gear icon at the top right, then tap "General settings" (iOS) or "Account settings" (Android).
- Tap Security.

If you would like to re-enable two-factor authentication, you'll have to go through the setup process again.
