In the post form, tap the GIF icon, then choose one of the popular GIFs displayed. To search for a GIF, tap the magnifying glass (iOS) or type in the search field (Android).
Creating a GIF
- In the post form, tap the GIF icon.
- Next, tap Create a GIF to access videos on your device.
- Tap to select a video to convert to a GIF. Now you're ready to select a three second clip using the slider. Choose a playback type by tapping "Loop," "Rebound," or "Reverse."
- To fine-tune your new GIF:
- Tap the scissors at the top right to re-select the section of the video for the GIF, as well as adjust the start and end points.
- Tap the little speedometer to adjust the playback speed.
- Once you're ready, tap the checkmark. Now you’ll have the option to add stickers, text, or filters to your GIF.
Finally, tap the arrow (iOS) or checkmark (Android) to be taken to your post, where you can add additional content, text, or tags before you publish.
GIF Guidelines
To ensure your GIFs upload successfully:
- Please keep your GIF file size to 10 MB or less.
- We recommend that your GIFs be no more than 540 pixels wide.
- GIFs under 3 MB won’t be compressed; however, we do convert all uploaded GIFs to the GIFV format.
- If you're uploading a compressed GIF, the file should be no larger than 5 MB.
- If your GIF is uncompressed and under 10 MB, we'll do our best to compress the file down for you. Again, the resulting compression is the GIFV format.
In general, we do what we can to serve your GIFs uncompressed. If we're unable to successfully serve a GIF that exceeds 5 MB, Tumblr will serve only the first frame. If this happens to your GIF, try reducing the file size, then upload it again.
